I’ve been lucky enough to spend a few days in the glorious sunshine visiting the tulips in the Netherlands. After landing in Amsterdam, which had plenty of displays of tulips of its own, we caught the bus out to the gardens at Keukenhof. They were a sea of colourful bulbs, from later flowering tulips, alliums, fritillaria and even some narcissus were still blooming. There are pots full of tulips to enjoy from the car park, before even entering the gardens.
After walking through the gates, it is just wow, an explosion of tulips and colour in every direction. It is hard to choose where to start, whether wandering towards to borders full of pink and purple tulips or having a peak behind the formal hedges and pleached trees to see what it holds. We wandered along the borders, up through the water features, stopping for a breakfast of Dutch apple cake and coffee, well it was my birthday so why not. Before walking through the shaded areas and into the woodlands, finishing at the formal garden.
